WELL-BEING AND COCHLEAR IMPLANT

Study on the well-being, empathy, and spirituality in patients with hearing loss using a cochlear implant

Invitation

Dear Sir/Madam,
We cordially welcome you to the webpage of the scientific project:

WELL-BEING AND COCHLEAR IMPLANT: Study on the well-being, empathy, and spirituality in patients with hearing loss using a cochlear implant.

The aim of the project is to assess the quality of life of individuals using cochlear implants, focusing on the broad concept of well-being.

The target population we aim to reach comprises individuals with hearing impairment using a cochlear implant, whether unilateral or bilateral, without additional qualification criteria such as gender, age, origin, religion, beliefs, type of cochlear implant, or duration of use.

The project takes the form of a survey, maintaining anonymity and utilizing closed-ended questions, providing respondents with the option of selecting a single answer.

The questions are grouped into three areas concerning:
  1. The cochlear implant itself - e.g., duration of usage, whether the participant uses one or two implants, etc.
  2. Hearing-related issues encountered by individuals using the implant.
  3. Aspects of interpersonal relationships and spirituality.
The estimated completion time for the survey is 10 minutes.

I have started a survey and want to finish it.

About

The project is being implemented by the Department of Otolaryngology at the Nicolaus Copernicus University Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz, Poland, with substantive support from representatives of universities in Rome, Italy; Madrid, Spain; and Rijeka, Croatia.
We have experience in collecting and analysing data, and have published research demonstrating the impact of religion or spirituality on well-being. We would like to continue our research and broaden our scope of knowledge, by considering hearing loss as a central factor in such a complex dynamic, which we cannot overlook.

We invite you to complete an anonymous survey.

Cochlear Implant

Advancements in the field of cochlear implants have allowed many individuals with hearing loss to achieve a higher quality of life, enhancing their self-assurance and social communication.

In this area, there is a wealth of reports confirming the benefits of implants in hearing processes, understanding, and verbal communication. However, less is known about well-being, broadly understood as empathy, well-being, spirituality, and faith, especially among individuals treated with the cochlear implant method.

Well-being

According to the encyclopedic definition, well-being is subjectively perceived by an individual as a sense of happiness, prosperity, and satisfaction with one's life (PWN, 2024). However, despite a unified definition, there are various perspectives on the domains of well-being and its impact on life.

Project

In the WELL-BEING AND COCHLEAR IMPLANT project, the focus is primarily on:
  1. Physical well-being, defined as health, and
  2. Cognitive well-being, linked to mental health understood as affective, emotional, or relational well-being.
An integral part of the well-being domain is the awareness of the meaning of life, which is associated with spirituality.
To date, the relationships and correlations resulting from this remain unknown.

What is known

Previous research has attempted to find principles of compensation, according to which the loss of health can be compensated for by other areas of good quality.

Furthermore, empathy and spirituality may play a significant role in the dynamics of well-being, enabling the integration and coordination of different attributes, thereby offering solutions helpful in coping with crises and the challenges of everyday life.

Well-being is a highly complex - holistic state, achieved through purposeful living and the quality of relationships, which largely depends on the quality of hearing.

Improving hearing is accompanied by an improvement in communication abilities.
